About Us
McKendree United Methodist Church was built in 1898
and was named for the first American-born Methodist
Bishop.
Bishop William McKendree , born in King William
County, July 6, 1757, lived his first seven years within five
miles of this church site. Although his family moved to
James City County, thereafter, he served in the
Revolutionary War under General William Aylett in the
Commissary (indicating that there were some continued
ties to King William Co., as Col Aylett is also from King
William.) At age 19 he joined a Methodist Society, and
was challenged by his father to take up the ministry. By
age 44 he was given the responsibility of the Western
Conference: Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, western
Virginia, and parts of Illinois. In 1808 he was the delegate
to the General Conference. He was an eloquent speaker
and an effective leader, worked under Bishop Asbury.
William McKendree was the first Bishop to use
Parliamentary Law to run a General Conference meeting.
When he was 53 years old his family moved from
Greenville Co. Va to Sumner County, Tennessee. Because
of the nature of his work, he traveled a circuit that was
often remote and far-flung.McKendree is credited with
opening up the "wilderness" to the West. He died and was
buried at his brother James' home in Sumner Co., Tenn.
His remains were later removed to be reburied at
Vanderbilt University.
